Ethnicraft

Belgian solid-wood furniture: a quiet, organic design language in oak, teak and walnut, read for the US buyer.

The house

A solid-wood house from Belgium.

Ethnicraft began in 1995, when Antwerp entrepreneur Philippe Delaisse brought a container of furniture and accessories home from his travels to sell, and was joined by his long-time friend Benoit Loos. The pair moved from importing to designing and making their own pieces, and built the company into a recognised Belgian house specialising in contemporary solid-wood furniture. It is based in Boom, near Antwerp, and sells through dealers in more than seventy countries.

Its catalogue is shaped by in-house head designer Alain van Havre, who drew the Bok, Mikado and PI collections, alongside outside designers including Jacques Deneef, who designed the Ellipse sofa and the Jack outdoor range. For US buyers, collections reach the market through authorised dealers, with lead times that vary by line and finish.

In focus

Ellipse

Designed by Jacques Deneef

Ellipse is Ethnicraft's upholstered sofa by Antwerp designer Jacques Deneef, who found his starting point in architecture and the rounded shapes he favours. Its defining element is a continuous curved back that wraps the seat, giving the piece a soft, sculptural silhouette in a catalogue otherwise rooted in solid wood.

The collection runs across two- and three-seater formats in a range of upholstery, and pairs naturally with the brand's wood and metal occasional tables. Like the rest of the line, it is built to sit comfortably in both an urban apartment and a country house.

Materials and craft

What the pieces are made of.

Across its work Ethnicraft builds in solid oak, teak and walnut, the materials that define the house, paired with upholstery and metal on its seating and occasional pieces. Wood is central to the catalogue; teak is used for the outdoor range, while oak and walnut carry the indoor collections, and each material choice is tied to a named collection rather than left general.

On every brand page these details stay factual and sourced. Collection names, designers and materials are checked against the maker before they go live.
