NESTREST, Daniel Pouzet and Fred Frety's hanging cocoon for Dedon
The woven hanging lounger that became an outdoor design icon: how two designers gave Dedon one of its most recognisable pieces in 2011.
NESTREST is the piece that made Dedon's name visible beyond the trade. Introduced in 2011 and designed by Daniel Pouzet and Fred Frety, it is a hanging cocoon lounger woven in a specially developed four-centimetre-wide DEDON Fiber over an aluminium frame — a form at once architectural and organic, unmistakably drawn from the geometry of a bird's nest.
The design starts with a structural paradox: the weave is open and breathable, but the proportions and curvature of the pod create a sense of genuine enclosure. From inside, you can see out; from outside, the woven wall reads as solid. Pouzet and Frety described the result as a secret hiding place scaled for adults — hung from a tree branch or a freestanding support by a specialised rope system, it settles into a gentle sway once occupied.
The weave is open and breathable, but the proportions of the pod deliver genuine enclosure — a private shelter that looks out on the garden without giving itself away.
The fiber that makes it work
The four-centimetre strand used for NESTREST was purpose-built for this piece — wider than the standard DEDON Fiber used across the broader Dedon catalogue. That width gives the weave structural depth sufficient to form the curved walls of the pod without requiring additional internal framing. Like all of Dedon's outdoor material, the fiber is UV-resistant and weatherproof, hand-woven over a powder-coated aluminium skeleton.
A standing variant and a lasting influence
A second configuration, the NESTREST Standing Lounger, presents the same woven pod on a freestanding aluminium base — for terraces where no suitable hanging point is available. The standing form extends the piece to a wider range of outdoor spaces without changing the interior experience.
