Zanotta joins Cassina, and Italian design keeps consolidating

On 5 April 2023, Cassina announced the acquisition of Zanotta, the Italian house behind the Sacco bean bag and the Mezzadro stool. With the deal, one of the most recognisable names in postwar Italian design joined the Haworth Lifestyle Design group, the portfolio that already gathers Cassina alongside Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, Ceccotti, Karakter, Janus et Cie, Luminaire and Interni.

Zanotta was founded in 1954 in Nova Milanese by Aurelio Zanotta. From the 1960s it treated furniture as cultural experiment rather than plain utility, working with the Castiglioni brothers, Marco Zanuso, Ettore Sottsass and others, and pushing materials such as expanded polyurethane foam and frameless structures. The catalogue it built, including the 1968 Sacco by Gatti, Paolini and Teodoro, remains a reference point for collectors and museums.

Cassina dates to 1927; Zanotta to 1954. Two of Italian design's foundational houses now sit under one roof.

What the deal means

Cassina framed the acquisition as a way to coordinate Zanotta's activities and growth, drawing on Cassina's international distribution while leaving the brand its own creative direction. At the time of the deal Zanotta reported turnover of roughly 25 million euros. In public statements Cassina committed to giving Zanotta ample operational autonomy, with its organisation and product identity left intact.
