Barlow Tyrie

The oldest British teak outdoor furniture maker, producing in Braintree, Essex and Java, Indonesia since 1920, read for the US buyer.

The house

A century of craft in teak and steel.

Barlow Tyrie was founded in 1920 by Victor Tyrie and Frederick Barlow, who had learned the trade by making outdoor furniture from teak salvaged in ship-breaking yards after the First World War. The company stayed in east London for nearly fifty years before moving to Braintree, Essex, where it remains headquartered today. In 1992, Barlow Tyrie established a second production site on Java, Indonesia, forming P.T. Barlow Tyrie Indonesia to work with teak from government-certified plantations.

Collections range from classic solid-teak garden seats to contemporary stainless-steel and ceramic dining ranges. Design work is largely in-house, with select collections made with outside studios, including Astheimer on the Cocoon line. For US buyers, collections reach the market through authorised dealers.

In focus

Equinox

In-house design

Equinox is Barlow Tyrie's flagship contemporary dining and occasional range. Frames are formed from 316 marine-grade stainless steel, which the company specifies for coastal and harsh-weather use. Seating comes with Textilene slings and teak accents; table tops are available in plantation teak or Italian high-fired ceramic.

The range spans standard dining, high dining and occasional pieces, with stackable chair options for compact storage. A Painted variant with powder-coated stainless-steel frames is also offered for additional weather protection.

Materials and craft

What the pieces are made of.

Barlow Tyrie's signature material is plantation-grown teak sourced from Java, Indonesia, certified under the FLEGT scheme (BRIK-VLK-0137) and the SVLK legality system. Additional materials across the catalogue include 316 marine-grade stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium, Italian ceramic tops, Textilene slings and hand-wound synthetic rope.

On every brand page these details stay factual and sourced. Collection names, designers and materials are checked against the maker before they go live.
