Cane-line Weave, the Danish approach to all-weather outdoor weaving
What the hand-woven polyethylene behind dozens of Cane-line collections actually is — how the Danish house developed a proprietary outdoor textile, which lines it runs through, and why it outlasts natural rattan.
When Cane-line moved into outdoor furniture in 1997, the Danish house faced the challenge every serious outdoor maker encounters: natural materials age and require upkeep; low-grade synthetics read cheap. The answer it developed over the following years — Cane-line Weave — threads a path between those two problems. It is a solution-dyed polyethylene fibre, hand-woven at the brand's own carefully monitored workshops, engineered to live outside without the annual oiling, staining or weatherproofing that wood or natural rattan demands.
The material is a specialised polyethylene, distinct from the polypropylene that Cane-line uses in its Soft Rope. Solution-dyeing runs the pigment through the fibre rather than coating its surface, which is why the colour holds across years of sun exposure. The weave structure itself contributes something that dyeing alone cannot: elasticity and a slight give that becomes apparent in chairs such as the Nest or Breeze, which flex naturally under a seated body in a way that rigid moulded shells do not.

The collections that carry it
Cane-line Weave runs through a large part of the catalogue. Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen MDD, the Danish design duo, drew Nest and Sense in the material — Nest a round, cocoon-style lounge chair on an aluminium frame, Sense an organic-shaped lounge series with the same all-weather logic. Strand+Hvass built the Breeze dining and lounge series around it, using the weave over a classic wire frame. The in-house Cane-line Design team applies the same weave across Connect, Horizon, Savannah, Chester, Kingston, Lean and Vibe, as well as the Hive hanging chair and Presley sun lounger.
For the American buyer the practical notes are straightforward. Cane-line established a US subsidiary in 2017 and the collections reach the market through authorised dealers. The weave pieces are among the lower-maintenance options in the catalogue — a soft brush and mild soapy water removes pollen, leaves and debris before they build up, and no sealing or oiling is required.
